Mileage

Money out

kBooks keeps a mileage log for each company: every trip you drive for the business, with what it is worth at the IRS standard mileage rate.

Log a trip

On a computer, open Mileage and press Log a trip. On your phone, open the kBooks app and tap Trips. For each trip enter:

  • the date and the miles (tick Round trip to double them),
  • Business or Personal,
  • for a business trip, what it was for (the IRS asks a mileage log to show the business purpose),
  • where from and to, and the vehicle if you like. On a computer you can also tag a class or a job.

While you type, kBooks shows what the trip is worth.

What a trip is worth

Business miles are valued at the IRS standard mileage rate in force on the day of the trip. The rate usually changes on January 1, and now and then in the middle of a year (in 2026 it went from 72.5 to 76 cents a mile on July 1), so two trips in the same year can be worth different amounts per mile. Personal trips are kept because the IRS asks for your total miles too, and they add nothing.

The top of the Mileage page shows the year's business miles, personal miles, and what the business miles are worth. That is the standard mileage deduction; using your actual car expenses instead is a choice to make with your accountant.
